Itinerary
1. Natural & Sacred Treasures of Phnom Kulen
The Kulen plateau features a unique microclimate and ecosystems that supply water to the entire Angkor plain:
- The Sacred River of 1,000 Lingas: Discovery of thousand-year-old carvings etched into the riverbed, alongside observing aquatic wildlife and colorful dragonflies patrolling the stream.
- Kulen Waterfalls: A refreshing stop to observe the humid micro-habitat created by the spray of the falls, home to specific bryological and vascular flora.
2. Naturalist Exploration of Popel Forest
An immersion into an exceptional forest, renowned for its rich plant and insect diversity:
- Plateau Biodiversity: A gentle hike under the forest canopy to observe plant species unique to the Kulen plateau and learn about high-altitude tropical botany relative to the surrounding region.
- Insect Life: Active searching and observation of butterflies, dragonflies, mantises, and pollinating insects inhabiting Popel Forest.
3 – Special Focus: The « Women for Bees » Program (Popel Forest)
On the edge of Popel Forest, discover a high-impact ecological and social project supporting local communities and pollinator conservation:
- Gentle & Sustainable Beekeeping: Meet local women beekeepers trained in gentle apiculture techniques that respect indigenous bees (notably Apis cerana and stingless bees / stingless meliponines).
- Pollinator Conservation: Understanding the vital role of wild and managed bees in pollinating the tropical forest and local crops, providing a sustainable alternative to destructive wild honey hunting.
- Women Empowerment: Learn how beekeeping generates vital supplementary income for rural households, strengthening the role of women within their community while protecting local forest resources.
- Tasting & Discovery: Presentation of hive products (local botanical honeys, beeswax) and an introduction to the unique flavors linked to the blossoms of the Kulen forest.
